Description
This elective offers an opportunity for students to function as an intern on the inpatient service of the Department of Medicine at Memorial Hospital. Students will be assigned to one of the six sub-specialized inpatient oncology teams. Working under the supervision of the team’s attending physician, oncology fellow, and junior assistant resident, the sub-intern will assume all the usual duties of an intern; these include admitting/evaluating new patients, writing daily progress notes, and implementing the care plan for each patient. As an acting intern, students will be assigned to both on-call (approximately every 4th night) and weekend shifts. Sub-interns will be expected to care for approximately half the number of inpatients as an intern, or a maximum of six patients. In addition, sub-interns will participate in all the departmental educational activities, including: daily bedside attending rounds, weekly intern morning report, daily housestaff didactic conferences, Department of Medicine Grand Rounds, as well as a weekly didactic conference exclusively for sub-interns. Sub-interns will also have the chance to observe a wide-range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures performed on their patients, as well as the opportunity to perform minor procedures under appropriate supervision. Through this intensive exposure to a broad range of both oncologic and general medical problems, students will gain an appreciation for the complex management of the oncology inpatient. Note: In the Clinical Medicine and Oncology Sub-Internship, it is expected that students spend the full four weeks on this rotation (this includes the fourth Saturday and Sunday). Please note: ONLY 4th year students may register for MSKCC electives. Additionally, all visiting students must apply directly at http://www.mskcc.org/electiveprogram for this elective. Module L is available only by special permission of Medical Student Coordinator.
