Description
Teaching Assistants spend the majority of their time under the leadership of Dr. Estomih Mtui, the Practicum Director of this elective. Students are expected to help prepare for dissection, attend anatomy clinical lectures, lab introductions, and exam prep sessions, instruct first- or second-year students during dissection, help with the student exam, and conduct review sessions. In addition, TAs enrolled in this teaching elective are required to (1) attend six supplemental teaching skills seminars, two of which involve an orientation session and an evaluation session at the beginning and end of the course; (2) develop 10 quiz questions, including explanations for answers; and (3) complete a self-reflective essay (1-2 pages). Students will be contacted two weeks prior to the start of the elective to make arrangements for the 6 seminar sessions. STUDENTS SHOULD CONTACT DR. MTUI DIRECTLY AT (212)746-6126 OR epmtui@med.cornell.edu to determine when specific dissections will take place. These dates should be available by Mid-May for Brain and Mind anatomy labs and early November for Human Structure and Development. Students should ONLY sign up for this elective if they will be able to attend ALL of the scheduled anatomy labs during the elective time. Any planned time away during the elective (e.g., interviews) must be submitted in writing to Dr. Mtui and to Dr. Carol Capello no later than two weeks before the start of the elective. Any additional circumstances for absences must be brought directly to the attention of the Course Sponsor. Students must sign up for this teaching course in Course Scheduler – NOT with Dr. Mtui or Dr. Capello. Each four-week elective will ONLY BE OFFERED IF A MINIMUM OF TWO STUDENTS ARE ENROLLED SIMULTANEOUSLY. Students can only receive elective credit for ONE of the three teaching electives (Gross anatomy, PBL Case Writing and Facilitation, and Pathology). Those wishing to do more than one may be able to do the other teaching sessions as an independent elective.
