Description
This elective is twofold: (1) Students will be responsible for co-facilitating a PBL small group in one of the Basic Science courses and possibly substituting for another PBL facilitator if needed; (2) Under the direction of a faculty member (determined by Elective and/or Basic Science Course Director), students will also either (a) revise or create a PBL clinical case, along with tutor guide and references or (b) write a Triple Jump Exam for potential use in the WMC curriculum. The case will be submitted to the Basic Science and Elective course directors for review by the end of the four-week experience. In addition to those responsibilities, students must (1) attend six supplemental teaching skills sessions, two of which involve an orientation session and an evaluation session at the beginning and end of the course and (2) develop 10 quiz questions, including explanations for answers; and (3) complete a self-reflective essay (1-2 pages). Students will be contacted 2 weeks prior to the start of the elective to make arrangements for the 6 seminar sessions. Students should only sign up for this elective if they will be able to attend ALL of the scheduled PBL sessions and faculty briefings during their elective time. Any planned time away during the Elective (e.g., interviews) must be submitted in writing to Dr. Capello no later than two weeks before the first day of the Elective. Any additional circumstances for absences must be brought directly to the attention of the Course Sponsor. Students can only receive elective credit for ONE of the three teaching electives (Gross anatomy, PBL Case Writing and Facilitation, and Pathology). Those wishing to do more than one may be able to do the other teaching sessions as an independent elective.
