In this surgery, the stomach is reshaped and somewhat reduced in size, creating a sleeve-like or banana shape. The normal region of the stomach (the pylorus) through which food usually exits is retained. Approximately half of the small intestine is bypassed, and the stomach is reconnected to the shortened small intestine. This forms a short channel in which food and digestive juices are mixed. As a result, much less food is absorbed and somewhat less food can be eaten.
This surgery takes between 2 and 4 hours. Most patients will be able to go home from the hospital on the second or third day after surgery.
